Overview:

Abstract: Preserving and presenting collection objects in special exhibitions of art belong to the basic principles of museums but nevertheless offer a conflict potential.
This thesis provides an insight into the history of the preservation of paintings concentrating on the aspect of transportation, from 1900 until the Second World War. The Nationalgalerie - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin collection was chosen as the thesis’s example. By having access to documents of selected exhibitions of the Nationalgalerie and relevant publications, an impression of the transport conditions could be gained. Indicators of an increased awareness for preventive conservation concerns could be proved. A result of this awareness was the improvement of transport conditions. It had also an influence on the grant of loans.
