Overview:

Abstract: The planning of a new chemistry exhibition at the Deutsches Museum in Munich offered the opportunity to develop suggestions for the presentation of approximately 80 exhibits from the museum´s inventory under the aspect of preventive conservation. In the course of this, the current concept of the exhibition and its structure, the climatic and constructional conditions as well as the re-design of the "Scientific Chemistry Department" will be portrayed. Moreover, the description of the exhibits´ characteristics of material and their condition of their conservation provides the basis for the development of conservational measures. Particular emphasis lies on the possible interactions occuring in exhibits consisting of combined materials. The thesis concludes with a general reflection on the effects of light, humidity, temperature and conta-minants as well as specific recommendations for the presentation of the exhibits.
