Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The aim of the investigation was to document the deserted medieval town at Freyenstein, Brandenburg. The urban site was founded in the early 13th century on open ground and completely rebuilt in 1287 in its vicinity after having been destroyed repeatedly. The monument offers unique opportunities to explore the early settlement structures of a town. A topographical survey of the 25-ha-area was an important part of the practical work making use of several combined prospection methods. Geophysical measurements included magnetic prospection, resistivity mapping and pseudosections. Site structures have been destroyed by field ploughing. Features like soil discolorations, accumulations of stones and burnt clay were measured in a coordinate system as well as surface finds such as collected sherds, iron slags and small metal finds. Many remains of buildings, cellars mainly, were localized in regular arrangement and it is possible to reconstruct the market place and some streets of the deserted town.
