Abstract: Eight antique marble sculptures from the antiquities collection Berlin, dating mainly from
Imperial Rome, were restored in the 18 th and 19 th century in Rome and Berlin. They went
under conservation treatment during the 1990s again. When the sculptures were taken apart in their single pieces, samples of various kinds of historic conservation materials could be taken.
These samples were examined microscopic by means of cross sections, with spot tests and by using FTIR-Spectrometry. With few exceptions the samples are hot-melt adhesives and putties based on rosin, turpentine or linseed oil and marble dust.
The results of the examinations were used to clarify the conservation history of the particular objects. And they were compared with the information gained from modern and historic literature about Materials, Methods and Techniques used in historic conservation.
