Overview:

Abstract: In case of extreme water damage in libraries and archives the water soaked cultural heritage get first freezing at -20°C and later they will be vacuum-freeze-dried.
This Bachelor-thesis deals with the effects on fungal infested photos which went through the process of emergency freezing and their subsequent lyophilisation. The goal of the present paper is to show in how far the usual steps of vacuum-freeze-drying are sufficiently preventive in terms of conservation in the context of fungal growth proceeding from extreme water damage.
Freezing has an inhibitory impact on vegetative cells as it is shown by the results of the ATP- measurement and the cultivation of fungi. The subsequent steps of lyophilisation have no influence on fungal growth. However, neither freezing nor lyophilisation have any influence on the germination capacity of spores (conidia).
