Overview:

Abstract: The following Bachelor thesis deals with the oil-sketch-collection of the Lower Saxony regional-museum Hanover. A storage concept for 253 oil-sketches (the bulk part of the collection) has been developed. The thesis starts with a broad history of 19th century oil-sketches, in particular of the oil-sketches of the regional-museum.
The manufacturing-procedures of paper and cardboard and material-qualities of the 19th century are then described, followed by a technological overview.
The ageing processes and damage-factors for objects with paper and cardboard supports are then explained to be able to meet the conservation demands for storage and mounting. The expectations of the museum and the location (e.g. temperature, humidity, light) are important for an individual storage concept of the oil-sketches which constitutes new storage as well as the development of a mounting for paper oil-sketches. Even though the museum added two storage closets for the oil-sketches, not all objects can be accommodated and in order to store the rest of the collection, the purchase of an archive cupboard able to store size A0 is recommended. Three examples represent the oil-sketch-collection and have been analysed technologicaly and condition reports have been carried out. On the basis of mounting techniques for paper a new mounting has been developed for the oil-sketches of the Lower Saxony regional-museum. Three mountings have been built for the exemplary oil-sketches. This is the basis in order to be able to store the rest of the collection. With the help of the museum two examples of the future costs for the storage concept have been carried out.
