Barbara Schönhart: Encased Nativity Scenes of the Styrian Folk Life Museum. History – Technology – Conservation Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The historical development and appearance of nativity scenes in general and more specifically the collection of nativity scenes at the Styrian Folk Life Museum is presented. Detailed registration and condition reports of all 19 encased nativity scenes highlights changes of the objects within the folkloristic context caused by age-related material alteration on one hand, but also repairs undertaken by previous owners or improper treatment on the other hand. Furthermore, an assessment of the problems generated by different types of alteration contributes to the development of appropriate conservation concepts for three encased nativity scenes which can serve as models for the treatment of the remaining collection and other such crèche-cases.
