Abstract: Although well known to display a high degree of mechanical stability, no research has as yet been conducted on the use of bacterial cellulose within the field of paper restoration. Produced extracellularly by the microbial strain Gluconacetobacter xylinus, bacterial cellulose is characterized by a particularly smooth reticulation and other features which make it potentially valuable. One of the most common weak spots in the process of book restoration is constituted by the inner and outer joints which require the use of robust and flexible materials. In this thesis it is attempted to utilize the features of bacterial cellulose for restoration purposes and to determine whether it represents a more suitable material for book hinge repair than substances conventionally used.
