Overview:

Abstract: The documentation of the inventory and the weathering behaviour in the mud constructions of the archaeological site in Athribis is a principle topic of this thesis. A nomenclature is developed and summarised within a catalogue. With the help of this information large-scale and detailed mappings on the object are established. Analyses are carried out to capture the physical and chemical qualities of the original mud material. Based on the fundamental knowledge about the original materials an extensive concept of conservation is developed. Consolidants for the mud material, completion mortar for the edges of lime and mud plasters lying on a mudbrick wall as well as injection materials for the rebinding of limeplaster on the mud subsoil are checked by methodical test rows and technical analyses. With these results an exemplary conservation is carried out on an test area on the site in Athribis.
