Heike Marius: „Double-portrait of a young couple“, a marble relief of the Lombardo studio (Venice 1520) from the Museum of Art History Vienna – restoration, conservation and new presentation Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The relief is a part of the accumulative stock of the Museum of Art History and is earmarked for realignment of the Art-Chamber (Kunstkammer) together with other marble objects.
The object, which came from Catajo with the “Estensisch”-Collection to Vienna, has been presumably restored twice.
Imprecise bondings and yellowed lutings intensify the distinctive fractographic image and the central fugue between the both portraits.
The reverse side of the mounting plate, which is not original, will be removed for preparation of the conservation.
The two dissected back sides allow a new interpretation of the object history as well as a classification of the fragments.
The compiled restoration-concept regards in a specific way the formal correlation of the two relief parts.
A preoccupation with various adhesives for the museum-like area occurred parallel to the restoration.
