Overview:

Abstract: This thesis deals with the pure research with regard to the development of a draft for the conservation of corroded timber in saline buildings. The main part consists of a catalogue in which the phenomenon of timber corrosion is divided into grades from 0-7 (0= new timber, 7= heavily corroded timber), according to optical and haptic criteria. Those grades are then related to the special situation of the timber (e.g. exposure to sunlight and rain, aerobic or anaerobic areas, climate, etc.). Afterwards, determinants for the different grades of timber corrosion are given. This paper also contains an outline of the actual state of research regarding measures taken with corroded timber and gives an overview of restoration and conservation techniques in further areas of materials (e.g. wet wood, polychromy, architectural surfaces, books and paper, etc.) with regard to salt contamination. An outlook and recommendations for further research conclude this thesis.
