Overview:

Abstract: This thesis deals with two polychromed predella-panels of the retable of the main altar in St. John's Church in Lüneburg (Lower Saxony). The authors developed a concept for the improvement of the current storage and usage . Since the two panels have not been recognized adequately in literature and by the public yet, this examination also provides an art-historical classification, a description of the object´s history and current condition and technological investigation as well as information about former restorations. The focus lies on a comprehensive analysis of the object’s environment, which is compared to the ideal environmental conditions for the preservation of wooden objects. Based on the results of this analysis, the authors discuss selected places of presentation. Regarding the different interests of church and preservation, they finally recommend certain ways of handling and presentation.
