Ulrike Körber: A Persian-Indian leather shield with East Asian lacquer decoration made for a Portuguese nobleman – Technical analysis and development of a conservation project Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: A Indian leather shield with East Asian lacquer decoration was made for a Portuguese nobleman in the 16th century. The technical analysis and stylistic comparison conducted point to the lacquer art of the Ryukyu Islands, an art that has only recently been appreciated. The decoration layer in the style of the haku-e technique may eventually be completely destroyed, caused by photochemical damage. The combination of materials presents a particular challenge to conservation efforts. Extensive technical studies and analyses provided the basis for developing a conservation project which places particular emphasis on maintaining the present state of preservation. The conservation of the shield is especially important as it is a testimony to a little known period in history and the Indo-Portuguese art.
