Wibke Bernhard: Four Rococo Candlesticks from the Vienna Kunstkammer: Production, Destruction & Conservation Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:
Abstract: Four virtuously crafted rococo candelabra, that were part of a formerly very extensive dinner service, let various issues about manufacturing techniques arise. The multi-step working process, with the use of form-giving tools, could be reconstructed by comparison with historical written sources or in combination with scientific analytical methods respectively.
The four candelabra were severely damaged in World War II and one candelabrum was almost destroyed by a faulty repair performed in the 1960s. Due to the intensive heat the colour changed and the porous material fell into numerous fragments. The missing pieces made an exhibition impossible.
The fragmentary surface of the damaged candelabrum could be closed optically using electroformed replacement parts. The candelabra quartet will be presented together with the golden centerpiece in the new Vienna Kunstkammer.
