Philipp Gräßle: A baroque sedan chair decorated with grotesque painting on canvas. Development of a concept for conservation Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The sedan chair is decorated with grotesque painting on gilt ground, although painting on canvas represents a rarity. It probably derives from Italy and was possibly ordered around 1720 by a grandmaster of the Order of the Knights of Malta. The compiled conservation and restoration concept includes all parts of the sedan chair, with a priority focus on measures of conserving the painting and its textile support. Due to an original silken lining in the sedan chair’s interior, the backside of the canvas is inaccessible. This complicates the treatment. Methods and materials for levelling the supporting canvas, consolidation of paint layers and the removal of old fillings and retouchings have been applied on a test area.
