Overview:

Abstract: This thesis deals with the potential use of ultrasonic testing to detect the severity of loss through defects in wood as well as the distribution of these defects in movable historic wooden objects. Special emphasis has been put on painted and gilded wooden objects, because other factors, such as previous coating or consolidation treatment, can influence the conclusions drawn from the testing in their case.
The basic possibilities of applying the ultrasonic technique in conservation-restoration were verified by way of extensive test series. Subsequently, the test results were compared both with measurements performed on various objects and practical experience in order to derive data about the efficiency of this technique in the examination of painted and gilded wooden objects.
These experiments with the purpose of identifying the potential use of ultrasonic testing in the conservation-restoration of painted and gilded wooden objects showed that it is basically possible to locate damages (caused by wood-destroying insects, cracks) in the wood. The ultrasonic signal also distinctly recognises the deterioration grade. However, further tests will be required in order to optimise the technique.
