Concept of preservation for the ‘Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle’ Simmershofen

The objective of this work is the ‘Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle’ in Simmershofen (north-western Bavaria, Germany) including the facade and the interior space, which shows design stages beginning from the 13th century time period on. Medieval painted stages in the nave exist in fragmentary condition. The choir exhibits in reduced condition the 1935 exposed mural painting from the first half of the 15th century. The essential damage phenomena in the chapel are a result from heavy moisture infiltration in combination with deliquescent salts, favoured by disregard from 1844 until the end of the 20th century. On the basis of the restorer examination from 2009 until 2010 a holistically concept of preservation with necessary arrangements for the chapel has been developed. Selected methods and materials were tested and evaluated on the basis of small probation-surfaces. This concept provides a basis for the intended care and preservation restoration.

Casein - Possibilities for identification and reduction

This work presents possibilities and application limitations for the qualitative analysis of the bonding agent casein in object-related samples. In addition simulated reference-samples were investigated. In contrast to ’Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy’, the most significant results could be obtained with ‘Thin layer chromatography’.
Due to an inappropriate implementation of casein as a bonding agent for mural paintings serious damage occurred over the years at restoration-objects. To counter a damageprogression solvents, complex-builder and enzymes where used so far to decrease this damaging layer. Therefore a further part of this thesis-subject deals with the reduction of casein-layers by application of the complex-builder sodium poly-phosphate. Phosphateresidua in the sample-matrix were detected after the cleaning procedure by scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy-dispersive X-ray analyses (SEM-EDX). It was observed, that a rewash-procedure applied on the treated surface could decrease the local phosphate concentration. However, no complete removal was possible. Furthermore does a pre-treatment with cyclododecane not assure in every case, prevention from infiltration of sodium poly-phosphate solutions. This residual phosphate concentration can serve as food source for microorganisms. In addition the hardly soluble salt calcium phosphate can be formed in combination with a calciferous substrate. How far the low concentrated residua from the phosphate-containing solutions reacts on the object and if, due to this cleaning-procedure, long-rang damage is expected should be investigated further on.
