Abstract: In cooperation with Sylvia Bartmann and Karl Schweikert:
Concept of preservation for the ‘Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle’ Simmershofen

The objective of this work is the ‘Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle’ in Simmershofen (north-western Bavaria, Germany) including the facade and the interior space, which shows design stages beginning from the 13th century time period on. Medieval painted stages in the nave exist in fragmentary condition. The choir exhibits in reduced condition the 1935 exposed mural painting from the first half of the 15th century. The essential damage phenomena in the chapel are a result from heavy moisture infiltration in combination with deliquescent salts, favoured by disregard from 1844 until the end of the 20th century. On the basis of the restorer examination from 2009 until 2010 a holistically concept of preservation with necessary arrangements for the chapel has been developed. Selected methods and materials were tested and evaluated on the basis of small probation-surfaces. This concept provides a basis for the intended care and preservation restoration.

Self-contained by A. Kromas:
Possibilities of presentation of mural paintings

This paper deals with aspects of presenting mural paintings within the concept of preservation for the ‘Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle’ in Simmershofen. A theoretical introduction to function and importance as well as actual handling with medieval mural paintings leads to the complexity of presenting aged mural paintings. A special focus is put on the concerns dealing with material/technological damage and aesthetic disfigurement. From this point of view the specific characteristics of the preserved design stages are illustrated in relation to the complexity of finding a concept: Fragmentary, multi-layered painting stages as well as color-alteration play an essential role in this chapel. The objective of this work is a concept, which should serve as basis for discussion. It intends to visualize possibilities of presentation, the practical realization and the mediation to the public.
