Overview:
Abstract: This Master´s Thesis deals with the documentation, analysis, interpretation of findings and the
treatment of a redcedar matting from the North American collection of the Museum of
ethnology in Hamburg. The object was made from the bast of the bark from a redcedar tree
(Thuja plicata) and is dedicated to the tribe of the Kwakwaka'wakw.
First of all the object is introduced in this context and a short assessment is undertaken. In the
further course the text goes into manufacturing and meaning of object and material, in which
the cultural importance and the traditional techniques with redcedar are especially elaborated.
This is followed by a contribution to the Ethnobotanic research to date, through the
specification of the cultural meaning and an elaboration of the botanic characteristics of the
redcedar. The detailed examination of bark bast allows an object-related Interpretation of the
damages, as well as an evaluation of the aging behavior with the help of the material
immanent properties. Finally an appropriate concept for the conservation and restoration of
the object is formulated and carried out in the course of this assignment. The developed
methods for reforming and consolidating the object are based on the relation between
material and humidity taking its individual history into consideration.
