Magdalena Brela: Two wings of a late gothic altar piece from the Universalmuseum Joanneum Examination, conservation and restoration with special emphasis on the treatment of tenting paint on wooden panels Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The double-sided painted panel paintings are attributed to the Master of the Madonna II of Valentin Pierer and dated 1524. The paintings have, with exception of the imprimitura which contains red lead oxide, a typical technological composition for this time period. Earlier conservation and restoration measures change the appearance of the paintings, especially the azurite sections. The reglueing of the right wing inside of the original frame presents a particular conservation problem. Another focus is on the consolidation of the extensive blistering of the paint away from the wood. The project also includes a theoretical discussion of currently-used adhesives and techniques based on a European and North American survey.
