Overview:

Abstract: The subject of the present Master´s thesis is a late Gothic polychrome wooden sculpture, from the St. Maria Himmelfahrt cathedral in Hildesheim, which has its origins in the 15th century. The sculpture consists of a life-size representation of Maria handing an inkwell to Jesus who is writing. After detailing the historical context relating to art and culture, the history of the object will be summarised and an environment analysis of the cathedral will be made. This will be followed by a technological examination and the itemisation of the rebuilding and historical materials that will be re-used. After the failure analysis and the analysis of the current state, an appropriate treatment plan will demonstrate the intended results.
