Abstract: This work focuses on the identification of types of wood in the conservation and restoration as well as a computer-based identification key to art - and cultural heritage. The historical development of the wood identification and wood anatomical basics initiate the first part of this work. The presentation and evaluation of macroscopic and microscopic wood identification, identification tools, as well as molecular identification, computer tomography, FT-NIR spectroscopy and portable digital microscopy as a further methods complement this. As for the second part is the presentation and enlargement of the interactive program "Commercial timbers" by 17 wood descriptions of historically relevant woods.
