Overview:

Abstract: Blanching of varnishes is a well known damage symptom in conservation. Nonetheless, a closer look reveals that definitions and classifications of the different kinds of damage are used broadly. Through research based on naturally blanched paintings and artificially blanched dummies it was possible to differentiate and define different kinds of damages and illustrate the results. Furthermore established knowlegde regarding the cause and effects of blanching was used and expanded. A discussion of the most commonly used treatment methods revealed the need for further research. A sparesly documented method using Regalrez® (hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin) to fill the damages of blanching without solving the old layer was investigated. Critical examination showed that Regalrez® should be listed among the treatment methods for blanching.
