Overview:

Abstract: The kinetic sculpture was designed by Hans-Michael Kissel for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. In order to understand its status in the context of art history research was carried out on the development of kinetic arts in the 20th century as well as on the development of the artist’s work. In addition to a thorough study of publications on recent methods of conserving and presenting kinetic objects several museums owning and exhibiting kinetic sculptures were contacted in order to develop a suitable conservation concept with the principal aim to once more show the Olympic sculpture the way the artists had imagined it.Translating the concept into action it became clear that the wide range of materials used on the object required numerous different approaches and conservation methods. Furthermore the restoration of the motorization could not have been achieved without the interdisciplinary co-operation with experts from the field of electrical engineering.
