Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The artist Jean-Pierre Gauthier created a kinetic installation, called Le concierge est parti diner, which was acquired by The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2005. The work is a modern janitor’s trolley that becomes kinetic when triggered by a motion detector. The movement created by the trolley is somewhat unexpected and in turn provokes a reaction from the viewer. This paper will examine in depth and document the history of the work, the materials and construction of the structure, the technological aspects of the system, in addition to considering ethical questions involved in the display, functionality and storage of an installation of this nature. The aspects of meaning of the work and the dilemma of the aspects of contemporary art conservation towards traditional conservation theories are considered. An interview with the artist is carried out to define the artist’s intentions and the works identity. This case study documents how to install, handle and store the work in the future.
