Overview:

Abstract: Only few Renaissance beds are to be found in Germany. One of these is located in Eltz castle in the southern Eifel region. It has been dated to the year 1525 which makes it the oldest surviving Renaissance bed in the German-speaking region. The analysis of the construction and the coating have revealed that both have been reworked. The coating has in part been retouching and in part completely revised. Due to a painted inscription on the head piece of the bed, the aforementioned date must be altered to 1566. This date, however, is not necessarily valid for the complete bed as the reworkings of the wooden construction and the coating cannot be dated exactly.Based on the results of the analysis, this thesis has developed a comprehensive conservation and restoration concept.
