Overview:

Abstract: By examination of the damage on of platform shoes with unknown object history an overview about the used plastics in the shoe production of the 1970ies was provided. The shoes were coated with tissue, their soles had a sticky surface and showed white bloom. The manufacturer and the production time for the platform shoes were indentified. Microscopy, x-rays and FTIR-spectroscopy were deployed in order to determine in a more detailed manner the manufacturing technique, the material of the soles and its degradation products. The materials analysis suggested that the contributing main causes to deterioration can also be manufacturing, use-related and environmental factors. Options for conservation methods, transport, environmental control, storage and exhibition were proposed.
