Overview:

Abstract: The parish church of St Pankratius in Hamersleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany was a monastery of Augustinian canon regulars until its forced closure in 1804. There remain about 300 liturgical vestments in the parishes stock. Many date from in the 18th and 19th century and can be linked to nearby Dorstadt monastery, famous for its embroidery. The vast majority is liturgical vestments. Primarily, damages has occurred from means of liturgical use as well as rather poor storage. The textiles are currently preserved in different locations in the church using several cabinets. This paper examines with the various risk factors and offers proposals to improve the storage environment so as to assuring the long-term conservation. It aims to preserve the vestments locally in times of changing parochial situations and structures.
