Abstract:	The later medieval memorial slab with the tomb effigy of Bishop Bernward situated in the Michaelis Church in Hildesheim has been examined concerning its status and constitution. Based on the results a concept for the conservation and restoration could be formulated. Particular attention has been paid to the numerous layers of painting. Todays appearance has been adversed by an uncovering with the effect, that layers of painting of different times are placed together. The remainings of the uncovering are firm white and compact layers, which seem like gaps of paint, seen from distance. The ojective of the examination is a graphical reconstruction of the original appearance as far as possible. Top
