Abstract: Silver objects react with atmospheric sulfur and sulfur that offgasses from surrounding materials, forming a silver sulphide layer on their surface. This is also the case with the masterpiece of Wenzel Jamnitzer from 1549. His casts after life are so fragile that they can´t be treated with standard cleaning methods. The aim is to test various techniques how this fragile object could be treated. This includes tests with dried roots from a soap plant, SurTec 104, two acids, electrolytical reduction, laser cleaning, and reduction through atmospheric pressure plasma applied both to small silver plates and reproductions of casts after life. The electrolytical reduction with a customized pen performed best.
