Sophie Hoepner: The limestone of Saint-Triphon – Causes of deterioration and Conservation instancing three epitaphs of Basel Cathedral Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The present paper deals with the causes of a superficial weathering phenomenon of a black polished limestone from Switzerland and facilities for conserving. Limestone surfaces are corroded by acid fallout, they become rough and change their colour effect. Three epitaphs from Basel Cathedral serve as example for the corrosion process of limestone in rain sheltered areas. As an alternative to a mechanical attempt to preserve or to rebuild the original impression of colour and the original gloss level, several agents for stone protection are examined by artificial weathering.
