Sarah Schlebusch: The crypt of St. Maria im Kapitol in Cologne. Salt-monitoring to facilitate long-term studies and restoration measures. Back

Overview:

Abstract: The causes of salt-related damage in the crypt of St. Maria im Kapitol were examined through a comprehensive salt-analysis and evaluation of climate conditions. The results were compared to prior studies for comparative purposes. Through salt monitoring, mineral crystallization in winter could be categorized, quantified and matched with indoor climate conditions. On the stone surfaces studied, exclusively halite was found to crystallize. Furthermore, it was determined that the relative humidity is very unlikely to be adjusted to a level that would hinder crystallization. Consequently, the ongoing salt-reduction measures which have been implemented in the crypt since 2001 could be continually improved invaluable.
