Gudrun Kühl: The general plan of the Hildesheim Marien-Cemetery, dated 1874. The restauration of a rare contemporary reference of funeral culture, drawn and written on tracing paper. Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:
Abstract: The general plan is laminated with a drawing cardboard and shows numerous tears, that are extensively stabilized by different kinds of pressure sensitive tapes. Small losses and tracing paper in parts peeling off reinforces the impression of the object being severely at risk at present. If measures preventing further degradation are not introduced very soon, extensive loss of information and material substance will be expected.
The restauration of the plan is based upon the analysis of materials being relevant for restoring operation and upon a survey of its state of condition being. After evaluating results effective measures are defined, and tested on dummies corresponding to original materials. Finally knowledge gained in the course of preliminary research as well asmanual skills resulting from trial works have to be applied to the original object.
