Charlotte Holzer: A Proximity Suit Made of Asbestos (1890) from the “Technisches Museum Wien”. Guidelines for Asbestos Containing Objects in Conservation Practice Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The widespread use of asbestos in technical and everyday products since the
mid-19th century is reflected in the collection of the “Technisches Museum Wien”. The mineral fibres pose a health hazard which affects the respiratory system. Consequently, the museum carries out conservation projects on objects containing asbestos exclusively in a vacuum chamber. Based on this, the topic “asbestos” in general and its handling in museums is discussed. Recommendations on the examination, identification, handling, conservation methodology and presentation are given, and in turn are implemented in the conservation treatment of an asbestos suit mounted on its original mannequin. The material identification is carried out by optical microscopy, microchemical testing, SEM-EDX and XRD. The construction of the mannequin was examined by x-radiography without removing the asbestos suit.
