Overview:

Abstract: The fire in the historic library “Herzogin Anna Amalia” on September 2nd, 2004 caused damaged to around 34,000 books, including 7,000 with leather bindings. The books were located on different places throughout the library and none of them showed the exact same damage. Damage to the books was caused by fire, heat, and the extinguishing water. To understand the damage fully, each factor’s impact will be discussed first, followed by a discussion of the combined effects. In order to understand the full scope of the damage, the prior condition of the books must be taken into account as well. Potential schema for visualization of the extent of the damage to the books will be presented for the “Bilanzausstellung 2014” (résumé exhibition) at the Herzogin Anna Amalia library.
