Overview:

Abstract: If it is necessary to solve the binding of an object, hitherto has been a conservator’s decision of a particular case. Within this thesis conservative criteria, which give reason for solving the binding, will be assigned and afterwards rated to attain a systematisation and transparency in the decision process. In cooperation with the Universitäts- und Forschungsbibliothek Erfurt/Gotha (university and research library Erfurt/Gotha) their reformation collection has been assayed under the point of view of long term conservation to draw one’s conclusion from possible influencing factors of cover, composition of the text block, thickness of the text block and spine gluing to the current state of the object. Construction-conditioned injury factors and such coming from used materials as well as already existing injury factors in the paper have been scrutinized and their impact to the long term conservation elucidated. The results of the collection screening generate the base of the criteria predefinition. The estimated and thereon systematically compiled criteria can be used for further decisions with regard to the further treatment of the collection as a decision support and allow a expeditious assessment of the single objects.
