Overview:

Abstract: Cleaning objects is one of the fundamental tasks required for almost every object to be restored. Various cleaning media and techniques are used according to each object. An electrostatic paper cleaning machine was introduced for the first time several years ago. There is a lack of reliable assessment methods to gauge the effectiveness of the cleaning process, particularly for bulk treatment of archived material. The studies carried out refer to a surface cleaning in order to remove loosely-resting dirt depositions. The selected cleaning methods are first carried out on standardised test papers with different movement methods, attempting to compare their effectiveness by determining degrees of whiteness, using a scanning electron microscope, a digital microscope and further phototechnical methods. Electrostatic cleaning, a latex sponge, a "Wishab®" white sponge, and a "Swiffer®" cleaning cloth are compared. The movement techniques for manual surface cleaning are described in detail and differentiated. The results are applied in practice, using maps from the "Niedersaechsisches Landesarchiv - Staatsarchiv Hannover" (Federal State Archives of Lower Saxony - Hanover State Archives) and posters from the "Historisches Stadtarchiv Koeln" (Historical City Archives of Cologne) as examples.
