Abstract: The Bachelor-Thesis describes the effects of fire, heat and fire water on parchment. The fire on 2 September 2004 in the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek was the background for this thesis. The first chapter mentions the damage on the library holdings caused by the fire. The next part describes the materials structural hierarchy, its property and different kinds of parchment. The influence of natural ageing on the material and the effects of fire water, heat and fire and its reactions and alterations on parchment follows. The last part of the thesis illustrates examples for a visual presentation of the damaged parchment for an exhibition planed in the library.
