Overview:

Abstract: Deteriorated vegetable tanned leather is a mechanically and chemically fragile material. On the basis of 22 leather- and half-leather bound volumes from the town archives Neuss the apparent damages on such naturally aged bookbinding leathers and their requirements concerning conservation treatments is presented. Also, the leathers’ state of preservation in context to the conditions of the production process is explicated due to changes in the tanning process during the period of industrialisation. Attemps on consolidation by application of bonding agents are conducted with the help of specimen of naturally and artificially aged leathers. Furthermore, trials concerning retanning of deteriorated bookbinding leathers are accomplished, using aluminium-alkoxides and formaldehyde gas. The results of the experimental part of this Thesis are the base of a concept for conservation treatment of the bindings from the town archives Neuss. The concept is conducted as part of the project.
