Overview:

Abstract: The master thesis deals with a problem that shows on many of the so called Panton Chairs that were fabricated during the second production stage from 1971 until 1979. At that time the polystyrene copolymer ASA was used. Many of the chairs cracked and broke after having been in use for only a few years. Today many of the Panton Chairs still exist in museums and private collections or households. Hence the idea arose to find a conservation treatment which allows to join the damages in a way that makes the chairs useable again. The master thesis examines the chairs and the material used closely and looks into different possibilities of testing and joining plastic materials. Hence a selection of assumedly adequate joining techniques and materials is made. Three test methods were developed to examine and evaluate the different failure patterns, the load capacity and the chance of stress cracking in the plastic material according to the diverse joining methods. Finally the joining method developed is tried out on two specimens of cracked and broken Panton Chairs.
