Overview:

Abstract: The artist Max Feldbauer was a representative of the German Impressionism. On the basis of the artistic estate in possession of the Municipal Museums of Regensburg scientific examinations concerning materials and techniques were conducted on selected paintings. In addition to the visual and non-destructive methods with visible light and ultraviolet radiation, material analyses of fibres, pigments and binding material were carried out by means of microchemical methods and Infrared Spectroscopy. Some of the artist’s own as well as contemporary statements about painting techniques and the creative process were critically compared with the gathered scientific findings and brought into relation. The knowledge gained provides a first overview of the working techniques of a quite unknown painter and can serve as the basis for further research.
