Mareike Möller: Stabilisation of color layers of historical wallpapers The possible bearings of consolidants on microorganisms Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The stabilisation of color layers plays a major role in conservation of wallpapers. The choice of the right consolidant depends on the target of the conservation process. Because of the individuality of the objects there is no generic solution. The criteria for choosing a consolidant will be named in the course of this thesis, allthough it is not possible to make a recommendation.
An important aspect of each conservation and planning process is the (potential) microbial infestation. Every new material that is placed in the historical substance has to be reviewed. In this thesis the consolidants that are used in practise will be avaluated in terms of their vulnerability concerning microorganisms. Furthermore color changes and the success of the stabilisation by using the consolidants will be tested and evaluated. The theoretical foundations are based on literature about the history of wallpapers, about microbial growth, consolidants and stabilisation.
