Anna Bogdanova: Concept for the stabilization and cleaning of a baroque epitaph from the Goslar Museum Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The work presented here concerns a baroque epitaph kept in the Museum of Goslar. It is to be found in the attic repository there. As a result of inadequate conservation conditions prevailing in its former depository the object has suffered various damages. The chalk layer displays substantial damages as breakouts, fissures and slicing. On top of it comes pollution of the epitaph by an excessive dust layer and multiple traces of water damage.
Aim of this work is to develop a concept for the stabilization and cleaning of the surface and the wooden plate of the epitaph. To achieve this we begin with a thorough examination of the state of the object. We proceed then with tests in search of a proper solvent for the substance to be used for the chalk layer consolidation. From these we derive also suggestions for a plausible consolidation material and cleansing procedures.
In practice dry-cleaning of some 75% of the epitaph surface has been carried out.
The ultimate search for a consolidation medium for the chalk layer and the underground and tests concerning moist-cleaning are pending.
