Abstract: Encouraged by the use of precious stones as decorative architectural and design elements, items of high craftsmanship were created which adapted the particular structures and colour intensities as well as the effective surface shine of refined and polished stones and reproduced these in their particular manner. Subjected by the respective fashion in times of history particular obsessions developed which fell back on and made artistic use of the techniques of painting and stucco craftsmanship: marble painting, stucco lustro and stucco marble.

This thesis considers the historical development, the technology as well as the characteristics of the named imitation techniques with reference to the refinement of architecture and its interiors. Individual consideration and comparisons are based on current and historical academic as well as craft literature.
