Overview:

Abstract: This thesis discusses the conservation and restoration of two gothic panel paintings owned by the Universalmuseum Joanneum in Graz. Dated from about 1495 these panels originally served as altar wings and were created by the Master of Eggenburg (also known as Master of Herzogenburg). They are painted on both sides while only the inner sides are gilded. Various reworkings such as retouchings and a darkened oily coating adversely affect the readability and cause an inhomogeneous appearance of the surface. Furthermore these factors hinder the two panels’ unity in appearance.
The main focus of the work concentrates on removing reworkings from the feast day sides which impair the visual aspect of the object. On the other hand the readability and homogeneity is an important aim of the practical part of this thesis, which was achieved by retouching and patination of areas that had been newly gilded before. At the same time a uniform appearance of both altar wings is desirable.
