Abstract:	This thesis is concerned with a polychrome wooden sculpture assembly from Japan (Edo period, 1603– 1868). The main figure represents the goddess Uga Benten, although her attributes are later additions. The figures and the two minor sculptures (erroneously interpreted as Bishamonten and Daikokuten) original identity is explored, shedding light on the technology used while also revealing alterations and reworkings of various pieces. Technological discrepancies between the main and the minor sculptures suggest that they did not belong together from the beginning. Concurrently with their addition, a new plinth was created that reused old fragments. Conservation and restoration treatment has been conducted on all sculptures and on sample parts of the plinth. An essential element of this treatment was the bonding of various separate components of the main figure, as well as the consolidation of detached layers of brittle and water-sensitive distemper and lacquer and the filling of cavities in all objects. Mindful of the general appearance of the assembly, appropriate cleaning methods have been developed for individual parts of the plinth. Top
