Overview:

Painting by Giulio Carpioni before restoration treatments.
Abstract: This work deals with the conservation and restoration of a painting which has undergone prior restoration treatments. The changes and the interventions of the painting are evaluated and linked to the restoration and exhibition history of the picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
Owing to substantial series of tests a cleaning system for the removal of the overpainting was developed. An additional part of the work includes the examination of the colour changed parts of the painting. On the basis of material analyzing testing, a lead soap formation was determined.
