Overview:

Abstract: The so-called Metellino-Chandelier was constructed by Giovanni Battista Metellino and his workshop in Milano before 1724 and was furnishing an imperial residence. It is made of polished steel and rock crystal decorations. The precious materials and the precise processing reflect the important meaning of the chandelier. Apart from the research of the history and the analyses of the materials and techniques, the evaluation of the conservation history is also part of this thesis. This includes the extensive addition of glass decorations by the Viennese glass manufacturer J. & L. Lobmeyr in the late 19th century. The conservation scientific part is the cleaning of the rock crystal and glass decorations as well as the reduction of the corrosion of the polished steel. To find the best methods different possibilities are tested and discussed in test series. For the preservation of this precious masterpiece a concept for the secured storage and transportation will be created.
