Jin Yi Lee: A baroque collage on painted alabaster from the Neukloster monastery, Wiener Neustadt. Analysis, conservation and restoration with special consideration of reconstruction possibilities Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The diploma thesis deals with the conservation and restoration of a 17th century collage that consists of paper and textile glued on a painted alabaster relief. This unusually composed object depicts the mythological scene “Aeneas’ Flight from Troy” based on an etching with the same subject of the Italian painter Federico Barocci. The art historical part of the thesis covers provenance research with comparative examples such as alabaster reliefs from Mechelen and baroque collages from Southern Germany called “Applikationsbilder”. The goals of the conservation are, on the one hand, cleaning to achieve a uniform appearance of the material-mix, and on the other hand, the discussion of possibilities for the reconstruction of extensive missing parts.
