THE CANONS OF KLOSTERNEUBURG MONASTERY
Technological and condition survey of a baroque portrait series, conservation and restoration of a painting with large-scale overpainting

Owing to the occasion of „900 years Klosterneuburg Monastery“, the substance and condition of a baroque portrait series are evaluated in this diploma thesis. The central topic is the oil painting „Provost Balthasar Polzmann (reg. 1584-1596)“. Being heavily restored, its appearance is influenced by several secondary layers of varnish and large scale overpainting.
Supported by natural scientific and radiodiagnostic examination, a concept for the conservation and restoration is developed. The practical work focusses on securing losses and tears in the textile carrier, consolidating the cupped paint layer by working with a low pressure table and reducing the shellac varnish. Additionally a discussion is held concerning the treatment of overpaintings.
